  • Nose Art - Co Pilot Side
This photo was taken shortly after nose art was applied in Herrington, KS. The Group stopped at Herrington to complete their final POM inspection. While there, many of the original aircraft were named and painted.

'Tangerine' was named by the Co Pilot from the original crew, Ralph Morrow. He was known to be quite the dancer, and "ladies man", and the plane was named for the hit song of the times, 'Tangerine'. The artwork was a "Vargas" style depiction of the Pilots (William "Bill" Dillon) wife.

"Angus" was the nick name for the co-pilot Ralph "Angus Macfarland" Morrow. "The guys on the crew used to call him Angus Macfarland because he was always short of money and asking to borrow some. I guess back then there was a myth or something about the Irish or Scottish being in debt or always borrowing money or known for being cheap.....".   "The Great Hartney" was the nickname for Radio Operator Charles Hartney and "Toby" was the nickname for Navigator Cornell DeGrothy

Notes: Source of aircraft naming and nicknames was the Co Pilots son, Beau Morrow.

  • Nose Art - Pilot Side
Photo showing the nose art on pilots side of aircraft. It was taken after armor plate field modification has been applied. Note that the ground crew made a "valiant" effort to re-apply the name that had been covered by the field modification.
